An atmospheric air gap between the inner and outer tube vents any breach to the outside, giving a visible telltale leak instead of silent mixing. Dimensionally it is a 10-inch shell unit, 120-inch shell length in a 2-pass arrangement. It carries 3/4-inch O.D. tubes. Standard construction uses cast iron bonnets, steel shell, copper (double wall) tubes, and naval brass tubesheets.
