Fifteen Catalogued Ranges for Steam, Water, Oil and Gas

Bell & Gossett built its shell and tube line around one idea: a removable U-tube bundle in a steel or brass shell, sized so that a standard catalogue number covers the great majority of hydronic and process duty. Steam condenses in the shell on one half of the family and pumped liquid circulates through it on the other, with double-wall construction where potable water is involved and dedicated ranges for oil, gas and compressed air. The ranges below cover shell diameters from 2 to 30 inches, tube-side ratings to 400 PSI and temperatures to 1000°F.

  • Steam-to-Liquid: The SU for general duty and the double-wall DSU for potable water. Steam in the shell, liquid in a removable U-tube bundle.
  • Liquid-to-Liquid: The WU and double-wall DWU, plus the compact CHX and CHXS at 300 PSI.
  • Oil Cooling: The OC carries larger shells and longer tube runs than the general-purpose ranges, because oil transfers heat far less readily than water.
  • Tank Heaters: In-tank bundles that mount through a single nozzle: TCS steam, TCW water, and the double-wall DTCS and DTCW.
  • Specialty Ranges: The HTWU at 400 PSI on the tube side for tall building risers, and the GC gas cooler rated to 1000°F.
  • Compressed Air: The ACA and ACFR aftercoolers use single-pass air flow, because every psi of air-side drop is compression energy already paid for.

Choosing Between the Bell & Gossett Ranges

Start with what is on the shell side. If it is steam, the unit is an SU. If it is pumped liquid, it is a WU. The two share their bundle, bonnet and shell construction but differ in baffling, connection sizing and rating, so they are not interchangeable even where the dimensions look alike.

Then check what is being heated. Where a non-potable medium warms potable water, many jurisdictions require a second barrier between the two. The DSU and DWU provide it with vented double-wall tubes, and they are physically larger than their single-wall equivalents for the same duty.

Then the pressure at the exchanger. In a tall building, static head alone can exceed the standard 150 PSI tube-side rating before any pump head is added. The HTWU carries 400 PSI on the tube side as a catalogued option rather than an engineered build.
